Rock Crawl Event Procedure 52.4.2 Clarification
Backing up, whether by use of a reverse gear or simply by gravity, will be permitted during the rock crawl event. However, distance for score will only be measured from the final stopped location of the vehicle, NOT from any previously attained position.
For example:
- A vehicle travels 105’ and gets stuck, distance for score=105’
- A vehicle travels 105’, backs up 5’, and then travels forward until it gets stuck at the 115’ mark, distance for score=115’
- A vehicle travels 105’, backs up 5’ and gets stuck in place at the 100’ mark, distance for score=100’
The stopped location is defined by the four conditions described in Rule 52.4.3 with the addition of a maximum time limit described below.
52.4.3 Specialty Events – Stopped Vehicle
Vehicles are declared stopped and distance measured for score if:
- Stuck in place – A vehicle is stuck in place for more than twenty (20) seconds.
- External assistance – A vehicle receives assistance on the course.
- Off course – If a vehicle leaves the course it will be declared stopped at the point first exited.
- Roll over – Vehicles that roll over will be considered stopped at the point of roll over.
- (*) Maximum time exceeded – A vehicle will be declared stopped at the point where the time limit is reached.
A vehicle that is capable of navigating the course should have ample time to do so within the time limit. The purpose of the time limit is to provide a stopping point for a vehicle that is unable to finish the course but does not meet the four stopped vehicle conditions in Rule 52.4.3.
For example:
- A vehicle cannot get past the 135’ mark on the course but is able to keep moving backward and forward 5’. This vehicle can continue to make attempts to finish the course until the time limit is reached. The vehicle distance will be measured from where the vehicle is when the time reaches the limit.
The actual duration of the time limit per run will be announced prior to the event. The driver will be alerted by a course worker when the time is close and when the limit is reached.
